Pro Tips: Float Mounting

Float Mounting is a method with which you can tension hard to hoop items such as garments without having to actually get them into the hoop.

First you will need a backing fabric, ideally something on the thin side, but stable and subtle according to the garment you are going to be working on. We like to work on organza as it fits this brief well and chose grey for this project. Calico can also be good if you are working on something that needs more stabilizing too. First hoop up the backing fabric in the usual way (see tips below if you need help with this) and then pin the area you want to embroider from the garment flat against the backing fabric.

Using a sewing thread, tack stitch the area around the embroidery to the backing fabric to join them together.

Remove the pins and now you can embroider the area. Once finished, remove all the tacking stitches and cut around the embroidery’s backing fabric as close as you can so that it is cut to shape and as tidy as possible on the reverse of the garment. Enjoy!

This method is ideal for working with items such as our ‘Stitch My Clothes’ stickers so you can personalise your items with your designs.
