This month’s winner of student of the month winner is Melinda Jane all the way over in Australia .
She has been working away on the Goldwork Star Kit Beginners Design B which uses cutwork bright check and rough purl, with crystals and Pearle Purl edges. The star is sewn into our holland fabric which is lovely and stable to support all the gold work stitches. Once made up her star has a felt back to cover over all the reverse stitches and finish the edges.
In the image above you can see the work in progress with the Pearle purl and crystals applied, just starting with the cutwork. Above is the loose purls (rough purl and bright check) before being cut with their dedicated scissors. On the right of the piece is a laying tool especially for gold work called a Mellor, an essential for placing the wires gently but securely into place.
The texture and finish variations in this piece really show each of the materials off to their best effect. It looks like Melinda has added an extra ribbon to the back to make tying it onto the tree easier. I can’t wait to see it in all its glory!
